Summary: A presentation through the eyes of the fire service on the requirements and enforcement of NFPA 241, Safeguarding Construction, Alternation, and Demolition Operations. These operations present an increased potential for fire due to the presence of large quantities of combustible materials and debris, as well as unusual ignition sources that may not be present following construction operations. Discussion will cover historic fires, the regulatory code path, gaps in the construction industry and real-life examples of some of the issues commonly found.

Presenter: Chris Towski is a Fire Lieutenant for the City of Cambridge Massachusetts Fire Department with over twenty-four years of service. His current position is with the Emergency Preparedness and Coordination Office. He spent over twelve years with the Fire Prevention Office where the primary duties were to enforce State laws and codes related to Fire Prevention and Protection.  He is certified in the fields of Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighter Levels I and II, Fire Officer Levels I and II, Fire Instructor Levels I and II, and Fire Incident Safety Officer. He has been his department’s Electrical Safety Officer for almost twelve years. In this role he has Instructed numerous times on different electrical safety topics.

Summary: This webinar will outline the process for setting design criteria for fire alarm systems and the components that are integrated to the fire alarm system. The content will assist a fire alarm designer in navigating the many available codes and standards. An overview of the available codes and standards will be presented along with a process to determine which codes and standards apply. The interface with the local AHJ will also be covered. In addition, this webinar will provide guidance in reviewing Construction Documents such as Code Plans, Life Safety Reports, Architectural Drawings and project specifications in order to determine necessary design criteria for the fire alarm system. Finally, an overview in determining the necessary coordination with MEP and other systems will be presented.

Bio: Deborah Shaner, owner of Shaner Life Safety, is a practicing Fire Protection Engineer with special expertise in fire alarm design. She holds a BS in Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and a MS in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. Her company, Shaner Life Safety, was formed in 2001 and is located in Frisco, Colorado. Ms. Shaner is register as a Fire Protection Engineer in Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Nebraska. As a consultant, Ms. Shaner has participated in a wide range of projects including schools, casinos, military bases, high rise buildings, hospitals and resorts. She is a member or various NFPA code committees including 72, 101, 1141, 1142, and 1144. She serves as a member of the AFAA Board of Directors currently.
